This is an open letter to Mr. Carl Paladino, seventy-year-old politician/businessman from Buffalo, New York, and Trump’s New York campaign co-chair, who in an interview on December 23, 2016, with the alternative newspaper, Artvoice, said his wishes for 2017 would be for Barack Obama to die of mad cow disease (after mating with a Hereford), and for Michelle Obama “to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla.” Mr. Paladino, ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York in 2010, and is currently a member of the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education. I will keep this brief, Mr.Paladino, because you do not merit very much attention – although this letter does.
You have said some very ugly things, Mr. Paladino. These things, which are about as racist as one can get, have nothing to do with the issue of political correctness, so please don’t go using that old chestnut as an excuse, Mr. Paladino. Political correctness could be seen as a strait jacket to keep one from speaking one’s truth, even if that truth is disrespectful, hateful, divisive, dangerous, and, above all, untrue. Most people don’t need such a strait jacket because they have the backbone and education to know how to be thoughtful and kind toward other people. What is the Golden Rule, Mr. Paladino? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you? I would think, given your name and background, you would have grown up with this ideal along with your mother’s milk. It should have been your first guiding principle. What happened? Did your Italian mother neglect to teach you properly? Because this is the kind of language, Mr. Paladino, that merits having one’s mouth washed out with soap, even at the great age of seventy. In some cultures, racial slurs such as you used against the Obamas would certainly merit a good old-fashioned spanking. Perhaps ostracism. Girls in Afghanistan are stoned for a lot less.
I don’t care, Mr. Paladino, what you think of President Obama’s job in office. That is not the point here. The point is that what you have said so publicly is cruel, nasty, and profoundly un-American. It makes you look like the fool, the bad guy. It is in bad taste. It shows not only a stunning lack of civility, but a phenomenal lack of culture and education. And you sit on your local school board? Oh shame, Mr. Paladino. Shame. With your attitude – and worse, your inability to see just how reprehensible your attitude is – you do not belong anywhere near children. Again, remember the Golden Rule, Mr. Paladino. Since you think it’s just fine to say all sorts of ugly things about people, perhaps some similarly ugly things should be said about you and the country your parents came from. Perhaps, Mr. Paladino, you are actually a Ms. Paladino. Yes, I think that’s it. You’re really a girl and unfortunately you don’t have beautifully toned, gorgeous arms like Michelle Obama to make you look good.
