A Secret Grave 131: Accursed

Josie tried all kinds of diets and lifestyle changes to lose her excess pounds. She prayed to a god she was beginning to think didn’t exist, or if he did exist had for mysterious reasons removed his blessings from her. By the time she was in college, she knew for sure she was gay and became convinced that was the reason for her affliction. Two years of psychotherapy brought some relief and self-acceptance. She gave up the church, flirted with drugs (cocaine and amphetamines), ayurvedic medicine, and shamanism before eventually settling down with a nice woman named Cynthia, an office manager for a building company who was five or six years older than Josie.

The two women lived happily together for a good ten years. Since both earned decent money, they were able to afford a house in north Austin and travel all over the country, as well as to Europe, where their favorite cities were London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

Josie’s weight continued to yo yo. She’d slide down to a hundred and fifty pounds and then balloon back up to a hundred and eighty or ninety. It seemed that without iron discipline she couldn’t maintain a weight that made her happy, and life as a result was a continuous, strenuous battle. She felt accursed. She felt miserable. And then she met Dr. Theo Dryer, a chiropractor who’d brought miracles to people suffering with issues like Josie’s.

Instantly Theo became a guru to Josie. The effect he had on her was worrisome to Cynthia, who was quoted as saying: “From day one Josie was in his power. If he told her to eat mushrooms with doo doo on them, I swear she would have.”

Well, that didn’t sound good. Josie visited Theo in his South Austin office twice a week for physical adjustments and dietary consultations. According to Cynthia, she would have gone every single day, including Sunday, if he’d asked her to. “The man had a grip on her that was frightening. I warned her. I knew from the beginning her association with Theo would end badly.”

To be continued…
