A Secret Grave 80: Damocles’ Sword

Janet was put into foster care in November, 1988, right before the holidays. She didn’t want to tell me about her adventures after that singular event, but I can imagine how stark and lonely her life must have felt, how badly she must have missed Betsy and her little brother Donny. She had few details about either sibling from that time forward. She knew Betsy had managed to graduate high school the previous spring, that she’d been allowed to take her finals a month late because of the death of their mother. There’d been no question of college. The last Janet heard from Betsy was the following note:

And nothing after that, not a single word. When Janet saw my portrait of Betsy at Art Basel she was blown away. If she’d had the money she would have bought the painting. Instead, she took  lots of photos.

And got in touch with me, who of course wanted to know every detail about Betsy and her family of origin. But after a flurry of emails describing their lives fully and vividly (that girl can write!), she informed me that she’d come to the part of the story that caused her the most heartache and it would be awhile before she could tell it. Talk about a cliffhanger!

It’s interesting to note that the life Betsy has described generally follows Janet’s version: childhood in Detroit, a move to New Orleans, a mother who had a string of bad boyfriends and was murdered. After that she recreated herself, lying about her religious and racial identity and the existence of siblings. A big fat piece of misinformation that leaves me wondering if this was the secret Victor had somehow figured out about Betsy and was holding over her head like Damocles’ sword.
