A Secret Grave 139: Rodeo Daze

The coincidence of an anonymous person writing a book with practically the same title as my own book about a lawsuit and death involving an alternative doctor is extremely eerie. It makes me feel conspicuous, as if I’m being watched by whoever wrote A Hidden Grave, and had better be careful about what I say and do.

That’s not always easy for me, especially since my stories about Victor Goodlove are public, and I’ve already gained a number of Facebook trolls who write things like, “Nicole is a fraud and liar whose website should be shut down.” I don’t want to digress here. I will continue writing until I’ve achieved my goal, which is to find out what happened to Victor Goodlove, no matter who’s watching or making comments. Right now I’m curious about what Helen Sprouse, Victor’s former receptionist, was doing in the same photo as Mary Hernandez, roommate of Victor’s patient who died of a sudden heart attack.

The photo, taken in January 2001, was related to a gala for the Fort Worth rodeo. I asked Ramona to find out details from her new boyfriend, Lloyd Peterson, who’d been associated with Victor back then. Here’s what she came back with: Helen, a native of Dallas, had worked for Victor off and on, and was a big sports enthusiast. As a girl she’d done barrel racing and had participated in 4-H, exhibiting pigs she’d raised on her family ranch at the state fair. So she was quite the Texas gal; it made sense for her to be in a photo connected to an event like the rodeo.

But Mary Hernandez? Perhaps she’d been a sports enthusiast, too. I asked Ramona to find out where Helen was and if Lloyd could locate her – I hadn’t seen her in years. Lloyd’s response was he had no idea, and did I think he was a detective?

Well, no. But he certainly was a bit of a mystery. I thought back to when I’d first seen Lloyd at Victor’s clinic in 2005, how he’d always skulked around the parking lot, smoking cigarettes and looking like a perv in a long trench coat with a baseball cap pulled low over his face. Now I wondered who this man actually was, and decided perhaps it was time to find out.

To be continued…
