One of the best ways to support our local Black community is to put our money where our mouth is and shop at Black-owned businesses. Oftentimes, we don’t acknowledge it, but the ways in which we spend our money is political. Many businesses donate to causes, and your patronage of those businesses will either enhance or detract their ability to fund initiatives they support. For instance, did you know that the co-founder of Home Depot donated over $7 million to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign?
With that in mind we’ve sourced a list of local Austin Black-owned small businesses so that you can take the guesswork out of shopping in accordance with your values. What’s more, small businesses drive the economy, and shopping small benefits the whole community, not just the business owners. Also, the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce has a great list of Black-owned businesses, and here are some other resources for finding out about Black-owned food service providers. If you’re looking for another way to support Black-owned businesses impacted by Covid-19 and looting, donate to this GoFundMe dedicated to providing financial relief to local Black-owned small businesses.
