Malina Cipleu – March Artist

ArtProfiler’s Artist Monthly series highlights one artist per month for exceptional work in his or her chosen medium.

Malina Cipleu is an Austin based artist, born and raised in Transylvania, the central region of Romania. She started taking art classes after moving to the US, and explored different mediums from charcoal, to acrylic, to encaustic. Malina taught children’s art classes and volunteered in art class at her son’s elementary school where she discovered glass fusing. Throughout the years she took numerous classes from internationally renowned glass artists like Kari Minick, Bob Leatherbarrow and Morgan Madison. Malina also creates jewelry using glass, polymer clay and sterling silver. She has participated in both WEST and EAST Austin Studio Tours since 2013, showcased her art in multiple local shows, and her work can be found on a regular basis at both Art Escape and Csilla Somogyi Couture House.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I produce my art in response to an intuitive search for harmony and balance. For me the process of making art is instinctual. I’m inspired by casual glimpses into my inner world, and I find myself zooming in, cropping fragments to make them the center of attention. Ideas develop in layers of glass powder, enamels, or textured colorful sheets of clay, and progress in an open conversation between the piece and myself. The result is an abstraction of a fleeting moment or emotion, an imaginary landscape conveying movement, suspended in time and space.

My art lives at the intersection of aesthetically pleasing and intriguing. It brings me joy when people ask if they can touch my work to feel the texture, or if they can move a piece in a different light to see how the colors will change.
