March Artist – Rick Van Dyke (Fireseed Clay Art Studios)

Rick Van Dyke is the owner of Fireseed Clay Studios in Austin, Texas. He’s been working with clay and a various assortment of objects which he uses for his molds for the last 20 years. Some of his favorite items he uses to create patterns is women’s clothing, children’s toys and doilies. Rick’s work is colorful, highly textured, sculptural and organic. He wants his pieces to look like they grew. His sculptures are mythological/ creaturist/ UFOian figures. He makes a lot of pottery for succulents, cactus, orchids and bonsai. Half of his pots are planted. He has been firing real gold on to his newest work.
Rick is very active in the Austin arts community participating in multiple shows and sales each year and giving artist talks and demonstrations to various organizations. Upcoming events include an artist talk and demo for clay artists at St. Ed’s University Clay Lab on March 6 from 7-9pm; the Austin Cactus & Succulent Society Spring Show & Sale at Zilker Botanical Garden Center on April 6 & 7 from 10am-5pm; Texas Society of Sculptor’s 27th Sculptfest in Round Rock April 26-28; and the WEST Austin Studio Tour May 11-12 & 18-19 at Fireseed Clay Art Studios — 2309 Thornton Road, Suite O.
